Bush Gives Pocket Veto to Defense Bill -- Real or Not Real?

"Bush announced he would scuttle the bill with a 'pocket veto' . . . But that can happen only when Congress is not in session . . . And the Senate maintains it is in session because it has held brief . . . meetings every two or three days with only one senator present. The White House's view is that Congress has adjourned."

Salaries of the bosses for the top 500 U.S. corporations

The SEC has started publishing the salaries of the bosses for the top 500 U.S. corporations. To be on the list, the company must also have filed proxy statements with the SEC this year.

You can display the results in a table or a graph. The graph is interesting because you can compare salaries across multiple corporations.

UPDATE: New Hampshire phone-jamming scandal

Thw Carpetbagger Report has information gleaned from a new book by a former RNC operative called "How to Rig an Election:"

Following up on yesterday’s item, there’s growing evidence that Bush’s Justice Department intentionally delayed prosecuting Republicans in the New Hampshire phone-jamming scandal in order to delay anti-GOP headlines before the 2004 election.
Just as importantly, there are new insights about the White House’s role in the same criminal controversy.

On the morning of election day 2002, repeated hang-up calls assaulted six phone lines tied to the New Hampshire Democratic Party. Three Republican operatives, including consultant Allen Raymond, eventually ended up in jail for their involvement in the phone jamming scheme. A fourth, former RNC offical James Tobin, will begin a second trial in February. In his new book, Raymond alleges that the scandal goes “to the top of the Republican Party” because “the Bush White House had complete control of the RNC” and there was no way such a risky tactic wouldn’t have been “vetted by” Tobin’s “high-ups.”

BREAKING NEWS: New Lawsuit Filed against Blackwater Today

Susan Burke files a lawsuit today on behalf of an Iraqi citizen, Dr. Jawad, against Blackwater for an attack that happened on Sept 16 at Nisoor Square in Bagdad. Dr Jawad's wife and son were killed in the Blackwater attack.

Three witnesses related their stories to Burke and her team. The witnesses' accounts appear on Democracy Now! which aired this morning.

Keith Romenard was chief investigator.

Said the witness: "The cars were in a semi-circle. The man in 3rd car started firing 3-4 shots randomly. The man was big with mustache, strong, white, military haircut. He was facing the convoy when he started shooting. "

The witness thought that the man was shooting above the car level, but when he heard a woman screaming "my son, my son!" he went in that direction, The man who was shot was a medical studunt. The woman was holding tight to her son.

The man who had been shot raised his hand not to shoot.

A man in the fourth car in the convoy line shot the mother, dead, using a machine gun. When he started shooting. the cars in front of the civilian cars spread to the sides, he thinks, because they were scared. There was a big red bus and two mini-busses in the convoy.

One car stopped moving . . the driver had been shot. Heavy shooting ensued.

The witness, an Iraqi traffic policeman, hid behind a booth, and was shot at three times. He ran from the booth, crossing the street, and hid behind a small hill. He saw that the first car was shooting at a another car. People got out of the bus and started running, hiding behind the same hill as the policeman. Ali Kalef Salman (SP?) He advised people to run in a specific direction to get away from the shooting. People were running, crying, and injured.

There was also shooting from a helicopter. They threw smoke bombs, shot at civilians and at cars.

The whole incident lasted 10-20 minutes.

Sixteen bodies resulted from the attack.

Bill O'Neill interviewed another witness, also a victim:

The man is a bank employee who was on his way to buy a gift for a new baby. He was driving toward the intersection when heard the sound of a bullet. He got out of the car to see what was going on. He saw two small blue unmarked helicopters and observed one man sitting in the open doorway with his weapon. Both helicopters began circling, one armed man in each helicopter.

He saw a white car start burning, he could see it in the distance. He called his mother on a cell phone to tell her about the burning white car incident; she urged him to come home.

He told the people behind his car to turn around so that they could escape. An armored car began coming towards them. He felt his arm (sic: his hand) and his left leg get hit. He opened the door, because he felt they wanted to kill him. The armored car hit his car, and continued on.

This attack was completely unprovoked.

-----------

Rep.Danny Davis questioned Erick Prince with regard to Blackwater personnel killing innocent citizens; Prince denied that any of his employees were involved in murder, saying only that an accidental ricochet could have occurred.

When questioned about this attack, Prince's account differed from the witnesses' testimony, especially the fact that helicopters were firing upon the cars. Large holes were left in vehicles that could not have been caused by ground fire.

UPDATED: Fire connected to evidence of crimes in the VP's offices?

The breaking news of the FIRE in the Eisenhower office and the news that the Vice President and his staff were involved in deliberations about destroying the CIA tapes are certainly related. *David Addington* who has been named as one involved in the discussions has an office adjacent to the fire, reportedly . . .

According to the New York Tmes article published this morning, the four lawyers involved in discussions with the C.I.A. on its interrogation videotapes: Harriet Miers, John Bellinger, Alberto Gonzales and David Addington. Initially, the White House indicated that they recommmended against destruction of the tapes, but now:

"In interviews, several administration and intelligence officials provided conflicting accounts as to whether anyone at the White House expressed support for the idea that the tapes should be destroyed. "

This was arson. I don't believe in coincidences.

Now the question becomes: "Did they set the fire to destroy more evidence or did they do it to distract the nation from the real "fire:" evidence of high crimes by the White House?

Thoughts on impeachment by moby

all across vermont people are voting to impeach gw bush and dick cheney. the governor of vermont is a republican and a friend of gw bush, and even he has been present when votes have been taken (some unanimously) to impeach bush and cheney.

here's the text from one impeachment vote:

We the people have the power -- and the responsibility -- to remove executives who transgress not just the law, but the rule of law. The oaths that the President and Vice President take binds them to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." The failure to do so forms a sound basis for articles of impeachment. The President and Vice President have failed to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution" in the following ways:

1. They have manipulated intelligence and misled the country to justify an immoral, unjust, and unnecessary preemptive war in Iraq.

2. They have directed the government to engage in domestic spying without warrants, in direct contravention of U.S. law.

3. They have conspired to commit the torture of prisoners, in violation of the Federal Torture Act and the Geneva Convention.

4. They have ordered the indefinite detention without legal counsel, without charges and without the opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention -- all in violation of U.S. law and the Bill of Rights.

When strong evidence exists of the most serious crimes, we must use impeachment -- or lose the ability of the legislative branch to compel the executive branch to obey the law. George Bush has led our country to a constitutional crisis, and it is our responsibility to remove him from office. now hopefully our representatives in congress and the senate will follow the will of the people and begin criminal investigations and impeachment hearings against gw and his administration.
